Wedding Photography FAQs

Here are a number of commonly asked questions about wedding photography coverage. If, after reading, you still have an unanswered question, please feel free to drop me a line at mail@zen-photographic.co.uk.

Can you tell us about the pre-wedding shoot? Should we have it? A pre-wedding portrait shoot is a fun & relaxed session that is a great way for us all to get to know each other & for you both to get used to having your photograph taken together holding hands & having a smooch!  This can be done whilst we meet up to have a look around your venue or at a location that is special to you, usually about a month before the wedding day. This is also a great time to go through the plans for the day & to talk over the photographs that you want me to take.

How long will you stay for on the wedding day? I believe in capturing the whole story of your day, so I will be with you from the morning preparations (normally 3 hours before the ceremony) to approx. 30 minutes after the first dance. I don’t like to put a definite end time on this in case things are running over.  Basically, I stay until the day’s covered.

What if we don’t like having our photo taken? It’s completely normal to feel uncomfortable & not want to have your photo taken. As a professional full-time wedding photographer I have lots of experience in getting relaxed, natural reactions out of my clients on camera. We would work on this process before the wedding day at the pre-wedding shoot, which 90% of my clients go for before the big day. I use techniques that allow you guys to chat & laugh with each other to help you relax on camera, so that on the wedding day, when we will normally only have 20 minutes for bridal portraits, you don’t spend 15 minutes of that precious time looking nervous with each other!  Please click here to see examples of my Manchester Engagement Photography.

How many photographs will we receive? I generally don’t stop taking photos for the whole day, aside from during the wedding breakfast, when I take a short break myself. The quantity taken is dependent on a range of factors (how many guests there are, the number of locations used throughout the day etc.). I don’t set a maximum limit & will take in excess of 2000 photographs on two camera bodies; these are then edited down to usually between 400 and 600 of the very best images of the day.

Will you take photos of the groom as well as the bride before the wedding? I usually try to visit both the bride as well as the groom before the ceremony. Normally I will first visit the bride whilst she has her hair & make up done & capture details such as the invitation, flowers, dress, shoes & some informal photos with parents & bridesmaids. If the guys are getting ready nearby or at the wedding venue, then I’ll aim to get shots of them getting ready too. If the guys are getting ready far away at a separate location & you want their part of the day capturing too, you can always add on a second photographer for an additional £250; they will stay up to the start of the wedding breakfast (5 hours). It also means that you will get photos from different angles of you & especially your guests, which might not be possible with just one photographer.  However, I shoot 95% of my wedding alone, so please don’t worry that a 2nd shooter is necessary – I’m actually happier working alone.

Do you take group photos as well as candid ones?  Absolutely! I’m happy to take a limited amount of group photos of family & important guests & work to a pre-arranged list, (I say to stick to no more than 10 in total, otherwise it can take over too much of the day) this can be discussed at the pre-wedding meeting & confirmed via email before the wedding day. It is best for everyone if no longer than 30 minutes is spent on the group photos; your ushers can play their part in gathering people together to speed up the process.

How do you deal with bad weather or low light venues? Having shot well over 100 weddings in the North West of England since 2009, I am used to dealing with both low light & bad weather! To help me through this I use professional camera bodies & lenses that can handle low light. I also have experience using off-camera flashes, which can help brighten up any location.

Do you charge travel expenses? Travel expenses for weddings within 50 miles of Manchester will be covered within the package fee. Expenses for travel & accommodation for further afield will be added.

When will we be able to see our photographs? I aim to have the photographs available to view online within 4 weeks after the wedding day.  This may increase to 6 weeks in my peak summer season. I add the photos to a private online gallery link which you will receive via email. The images are print-ready & available to download straight away.  This gallery can be shared with friends & family so they can download their own images, to save you any hassle. A small selection will also be added to my blog with your approval.  I would also tag you on social media once I have uploaded anything online for you to check first.

What camera do you use? I use professional digital SLR cameras & lenses by Nikon, currently the 2 x D750s & prime lenses. These are highly capable for weddings as they are well renowned for their low light capabilities & quick focusing systems, ideal for catching those important moments, even in the darkest of venues! I always carry two cameras with me to each wedding, a range of lenses, plus another back-up in the car. This means that not only do I have a spare camera in case one breaks during the day, but that I can carry on taking photos & not miss any important moments throughout the day.

What albums do you supply? My current range is handpicked from the very best UK wedding album manufacturers. All the albums I use are hand finished, have edge-to-edge printing & open out flat to allow images to be spread right across two pages, with no loss of the image in the centre crease. A wide variety of sizes & covers are available, including leather & photo-cover. Can we see the album design before it goes to print? Yes, I will put a design together using your favourite 75-150 chosen images & then send an electronic copy of the page layouts. I want your album to be as perfect as possible & to your exact specifications before going to print. You then approve the album before we go to print.

How long will our album take to arrive? All of my albums are made in the UK, so there’s no waiting for 3 months for your album to arrive from the other side of the globe! Once you have signed off the design, depending on the album chosen, it will take 2-4 weeks for it to be delivered.

What’s included in the photography packages? All of my packages include a face-to-face meet-up, either at the time of booking or a few weeks before the wedding day, to finalise the timings & group shots. On the day, the WEEKDAY package includes up to 6 hours of coverage, which will be decided before the wedding day.  The WEEKEND/ DESTINATION package includes a full day’s wedding photography coverage (approx. 10 hours, from 3 hours before the ceremony to 30 mins after the first dance), plus a minimum of 400 fully edited high resolution images which will be provided via an online proofing gallery & available for download for yourselves & wedding guests.

Are you insured? Yes, all my equipment is fully insured & I am covered by public liability & indemnity insurance up to £5,000,000.  The National Trust insists on photographers having this level of insurance if shooting weddings at their venues.  North West NT venues I have shot at include Dunham Massey, Quarry Bank Mill & East Riddlesden Hall.

Are you a member of any photographic professional bodies? Yes, I am a qualified member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP) & The Guild of Photographers.

Right, how do we book? Once we have had chance to meet up or chatted on the phone or via Skype & you have made the decision to go ahead with the booking, just let me know & I will send you a confirmation email outlining all of the package details.  A £300 booking fee is then paid to secure your date & then your wedding photography contract is emailed out for you both to check & sign.  This is done through online signature software & can be completed effortlessly on your iPhone/ tablet.
